Walking Field Trip - National Child Day Today we explored Research Park! We climbed some trees, found some "ice fossils", sang the Nature Song and the Varsity School Chant, and we had a GREAT time! We then reflected in our journals about our outing and the Rights of the Child. Did you know that 193 countries have signed the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child? Thanks to our volunteers Mme Wendy and M John for joining us on the walk! Parent Teacher Conferences - Nov 22 & 23
Please make sure you have signed up for a conference either Thursday evening or Friday day. Mme Ireland looks forward to re-connecting with everyone and sharing each student's learning journey with parents. Abi's Blog Post Today we worked on our Indian animals and we did our exit slip on rocks and minerals. You can ask us about the causes of erosion, 3 ways rocks and minerals are used today and what I learned this year during our rock study. 3 Volunteers Needed Art Felt Studio is facilitating an incredible workshop for our class on November 30th. They require 3 parent volunteers to assist as the project is complicated and students will be using felting needles. Without adult volunteers is will be next to impossible to support 25 students throughout the process with just Mme Ireland and the Art Felt Instructor. Please consider spending some time with us during this amazing art workshop as students create their very own Peruvian Ilama dry felting banner. Contact Mme Ireland as soon as possible if you can spare 2 hours in the morning on November 30th. Milles mercis! It is supposed to be cold and snowy, so dress accordingly please! We have started an art and writing projet about India's animals. Here is a picture showing our process. We listened to a story first, identified the animals in the story, looked a photo graph, chose our animal and began to draw our ideas for our good copy. The good copy will also include Indian motifs and patterns. UPDATE REGARDING: National Child Day Walking Field Trip - November 20th. We are still in need of TWO VOLUNTEERS to join us in the morning from 8:05 - 10:05 am for our walking Field Trip to Research Park. If we can't get any volunteers, we won't be able to go. If you have volunteer clearance and can spare 2 hours in the morning to join us for a Fresh Air Experience, please contact Mme Ireland. MERCI! SCIENCE Sandra Vandenhoff an Audiologist from the CBE came to talk to us today about hearing and sound. Did you know that 3 of the smallest bones in our body are found in our inner ear? Ask me to name them for you "en Français". Today Mme Ireland taught the students a song that she wrote about the parts of the ear. Students learned the words and actions to the song. We love learning with our brains and our bodies. Chanson de l'oreille MATH Students are learning about BIG numbers! Today they practiced ordering numbers and were literally "SKIP" counting in class by 100's. Social Studies - Les épices de l'Inde Today Mme Ireland took us on an Indian "spice walk". We got to smell a variety of spices like "cumin, cardamon, tumeric, fennel, pepper, fenegruk, coriander and cinnamon. We each had a chance to use a mortar and pestle to crush up the grains and seeds. Wow! What great scents! We can't wait for our India Day Celebration on November 27 so we can taste these delicious flavours. MATH In math, students are learning about ordering. Today they practiced the strategy of looking from Left to Right and used their understanding of place value to order numbers from smallest to BIGGEST and BIGGEST to smallest. Practice at home if you like! LES COPAINS Aujourd'hui nous avons visité nos copains de la salle 3A. On a chanter un chanson "C'est l'hiver" que Mme Ireland a écrit. Après que nous avons enseigner le chanson, les copains ont dessiné les vêtements d'hiver et pratiqué les mots en français. SCIENCE
In Science we have been exploring crystal formation. We diluted sugar, Borax (detergent), epsom salt and table salt in a variety of containers with hot water. We have now waited one week and will record our observations tomorrow. I wonder what size and shape the crystals will be? What do you think? Let's talk about it at home. Orders are due November 12th. Please place your orders on-line this weekend so Mme Ireland can order the books first thing on Monday. New scholastic catalogues for December will be coming home next week. Please remember there is school on Monday! À lundi les amis! Your Invited! Please join us tomorrow at 10:30 am in the gym for our Remembrance Day Assembly. All parents are welcome to attend. We remind students that during tomorrow's assembly, there is no applause. Students will demonstrate their respect and recognition of the enormous sacrifices of our Veterans, current Armed Forces Personnel and Canadian Peacekeepers, with their silence and respectful behaviour during this somber occasion. Students have been learning about perseverance. They watched the following video and then discussed their observations. This was followed by a journal reflection, Here is the link to the video. https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=193833631507911&id=137187660126037 It is truly amazing and really speaks to our virtue of the month: la persévérance How might this video help you achieve your goal for the month? Think about where you are on the "montagne de progrès" (goal setting tool) and what you might need to do in order to reach the summit. The goal was to create an oral story about "Place Value". Mme Ireland modelled the story and we contributed our ideas. It was fun! ELA Students have been studying this poem and learning about long i and short i vowel sounds. Can you be a vowel detective and search for words in the poem that have the long and short i sound? Maybe you can also come up with some new words too. Students are also learning about "homonyms". Ask them to tell you what this means and how the words "two, to and too" are connected. They'll be learning more about it this week and coming up with their own list of homonyms. Also, the word family this week is: ell, like in the word shell, found in the poem. Can you make a list of ell words at home and then a funny poem or sentence with them? |
