Calgary Science Network Presentation with Rod Smith This morning we had a visit from a Geologist, Rod Smith. He talked to us about rocks and minerals and we got to try some hands on tests and experiments. Ask me what a streak test is and how we tested the "hardness" of various minerals. We also saw something interesting during the "acid test". I can tell you all about it. Tomorrow Mme Ireland will be giving us an "exit slip" where we will write about our understanding from today's presentation. English Language Arts - Writing This afternoon we brainstormed some ideas for our English Writing Project. Students will get to create an Autumn Soup or Halloween Stew recipe. We discussed the important elements for a successful recipe, which includes a title, an ingredients list and step by step instructions. We also discussed the success criteria for this assignment and the expectations. Our goal is to write a clear, detailed and well organized recipe , to use our understanding of letter sounds to write phonetically and to use tools such as a dictionary or thesaurus to search for new words and correct spelling. Mme Ireland can't wait to read about our delicious or perhaps ghoulish creations. MATH Voici nos centres de math. On apprends à propos des nombres jusqu'a 1000. Demande moi d'expliquer les jeux. Students are learning about number sense to 1000. Rotating through a variety of math centres, they practice and consolidate skills around place value, addition and number combinations. Reminder About Walking Field Trip Tomorrow we WALK to Bowmont Park. Please read Monday's Agenda Post for more information and come prepared for a great day of learning OUTSIDE! We leave at 8:30 am sharp! Walking Field Trip - Bowmont Park Please remember that we are walking to Bowmont Park on Wednesday, October 24th for "Take Me Outside Day". What to Bring: This is a full morning (8:30 am - 12:30 pm), fresh air experience. Students will need a sturdy pair of running/walking or hiking shoes, a bag lunch, a snack, a water bottle, a hat and mitts and a backpack. Please remember to dress in layers (start with a t-shirt, then a hoodie/fleece and finally a windproof/waterproof jacket on top). Please do not send your child to school in boots, crocs or sandals as they will either be too heavy and uncomfortable or inappropriate for walking down dirt trails. Trip Details: Our journey will take us down Valiant Dr to the pedestrian footbridge over Shaganappi Trail to Voyageur Drive. We will then walk down 40 Ave NW all the way to the escarpment at 53 St NW. We will walk south along the escarpment to Bowmont Park. During our walk we will only cross roads at marked cross-walks and students will be divided into smaller groups with adult leaders in charge. Potential hazards during this trip include: vehicular traffic, pedestrians, cycle traffic, off leash dogs, other park users, the Bow River, wild animals and insects, felled trees, uneven ground, loose gravel, mud and thorny plants. We will spend the day exploring the park, learning about rocks, erosion and other land based learning topics. We will have our snack and lunch out on the trail and return to school following the same route, by 12:20 pm. If you have further questions, please speak to Mme Ireland. Études Sociales Quand on pense à la géographie de l'Inde qu'est ce qui est le même et différent en comparison avec le Canada? Mots clés: ville capitale, frontières, montagnes, rivières, champs, terrain, la côte etc. Check out this link on Google Earth https://earth.google.com/web/@20.98570035,82.75252935,255.32270898a,5556489.04220707d,35y,0h,0t,0r THIS WEEK'S READING GOAL: We continue to focus on reading with precision and fluency. Our strategy this week is to skip tricky or unknown words, read on and then return and try again. By reading on we think the other words in the sentence will help us make sense of the tricky or new word. We also know that finger tracking, as well as chunking larger words into syllables (cut at the vowel) helps improve our reading and understanding. HEALTH Students have been discussing goal setting in health class. Today we looked at our Mountain of Success and each student chose a specific goal they would like to work on. They completed each section below, included strategies for achieving their goal and plotted themselves where they believe they are beginning on the mountain. The goal is to reach the summit! Toujours plus haut Varsity! Mme Ireland is away on Friday!
M Simon Robitaille will be the substitute teacher. Études Sociales Today we watched a video about a 12 year old girl named Tanya, who lives in India. The video was in French and we really had to pay close attention as they spoke VERY fast. Mme Ireland paused the video a few times so we could discuss our understanding. We learned how to take notes and jot down important facts using our new research sheet. We can write words, or draw pictures. It is a neat way to learn. Did you know that Varsity Acres School works with the University of Calgary and their teachers in training? Today we had two aspiring teachers visit our classroom. Over the next two weeks we will "host" a number of student teachers in our classroom. They will get see what learning looks like in French Immersion. |
