Diary of a Caterpillar ELA Project In combination with our lifecycles unit, students will be learning about Diary Writing. Drawing inspiration from the books of Doreen Cronin like "Diary of a Worm" Diary of a Spider", students will create a diary from the persepctive of their caterpillar. For further inspiration, students will create their very own "caterpillar stuffie" using an old pair of socks. Thank you Ralph for the idea! Students have been asked to source out an old pair a socks that can be used to create their stuffie. Mme Ireland will provide the thread, needles, pipe cleaners and buttons for decoration. Please have your materials ready by Wednesday, June 5th. ART REFLECTION - les structures Students are coming home today with their water colour structure project. The art was created with water colour pencils and sharpies. It reflects their understanding of shape and perspective. They also completed a self -evaluation on the back. Take a moment to have a chat about the process and reflections with your child. It is great to hear them talking about their work. L'étang est maintenant plein d'eau, il y a des canards et canetons, et les arbres sont plein de belles feuilles. Nous avons joué un jeu - Camouflage et appris comment les animaux doivent camouflager pour la protection. Nous avons aussi discuté les principes des adaptations des animaux. Merci à Mme Wendy et Mme Barb, nos bénévoles.
Classe en plein air - CEPA Monthly Walking Field Trip Tomorrow afternoon we will enjoy another glorious day outside at Research Park. Students are encouraged to bring the following:
LA SANTÉ/HEALTH - with Nurse Jen
Today our school nurse, Jen came in to talk to us about germs, hand washing and how to stay healthy. We did an experiment with "fake germs" and how hand washing is an important thing we can do to stay healthy. We learned that there are "good germs" in our body that help battle "bad germs", but that the germs in our body, need to stay in our body! Did you know that when you sneeze or cough and forget to do it into your elbow or sleeve, that those germs can travel up to a 5 meter radius? We measured our classroom and realized that one sneeze can take over the entire classroom. YUCK! Below are some photos of how those germs can like to hide in place like between our fingers and in our nails. La Tunisie Today we had a guest speaker, Mme Ymène. She was born and raised in Tunisia and now lives in Calgary. She shared some amazing pictures and talked about many wonderful things about Tunisia. Did you know that she can speak English, French and Arabic? It was pretty cool to have her do the presentation in French and have her sing the alphabet in Arabic as well. We look forward to learning more about this fascinating country.
Volunteer Tea Parents who have volunteered in the classroom or school this year are invited to our Volunteer Appreciation Tea tomorrow morning in the gym. Please join us for some goodies, tea/coffee and a slideshow. We appreciate everything you do to make Varsity such a great school and learning community. BOKS - https://www.bokskids.org/ Today Lauren from BOKS came to share some fun exercises with us to help us stress less, deal with extra energy and help us concentrate. We did some "chair aerobics" and some square breathing. Friday Updates - souviens d'amener vos lampes à poche et une couverture pour la lecture demain. Aussi, placer vos commandes pour Scholastic avant l'heure du midi!
Summer Reading is Just Around the Corner This is your last opportunity to purchase books through Scholastic to keep you moving along the reading train this summer. Your purchases through Scholastic also help build our classroom library full of amazing books. Deadline to place orders is Friday at noon! FLASHLIGHT FRIDAY LA LECTURE PAR LA LAMPE DE POCHE On Friday, students are invited to bring a flashlight, a blanket and their favourite book to read in the classroom. Mme Ireland was inspired by this idea during a PD that she went to at the Children's Reading Place in Inglewood last night. What a great way to inspire reading for everyone. Students are highly encouraged to visit the Children's Reading Place this summer with their families. It is an amazing experience. MATH Students are learning how to analyse data collected during a classroom survey. T Today they learned how to plot the data (les donnés) onto a linear plot (tracé linéaire). Students were then encouraged to design their own survey question, accumulate the data and then analyse it using a linear plot or bar graph (diagramme à bande). SCIENCE Students began a new topic in science last week. The lifecycles of animals. They began the unit with the following "BIG" question: Qu'est ce que c'est l'impact des humaines sur les cycles de vie des animaux? Students then did a world café style exercise where they circulated around the room and observed, interpreted and commented on a variety of photographs showing animals and animal habitats. Ask your child to tell you about the photos and how they prompted them to look at the "BIG" question. SCholastic ORDERS ARE DUE FRIDAY!!!Orders are due Friday, May 24th.
